The Belfast District Museum was operated from 2007 to 2013 on behalf of the Christchurch City Council by the Belfast District Museum Trust, and is adjacent to the historic Old Schoolmaster's House (built 1877) on the Kapuatohe Historic Reserve. SHG and BDMT were affiliated before the latter wound up in 2013.

The museum (still closed in 2015 from earthquake damage in 2011) houses an extensive photograph collection plus objects from earlier days from the Belfast District (originally "Styx", and including Belfast, Northwood, Coutts Island, Ouruhia, and part of Redwood).
